Travel Information:
Your Steelhead Adventure begins and ends in Ketchikan. Alaska Airlines services Ketchikan on a daily basis out of Seattle and Anchorage. We are a short two hours from Seattle try this link for flight information www.alaskaair.com. We will coordinate your airport pickups and departures.
Here is a list of recommend gear:
- 2 rods: one for backup 4 pcs rods in 7or 8 weight for steelhead
Sage XP 968 is a nice all around eight weight that fishes nice for these size fish
Some waters are nice to fish with a two-handed rod- bring a six, seven or eight weight / with Rio Lines-and tips (call for specifics)
1 rod: 4-5 weight for trout
Lines: 2- Weight forward lines 5-8 wgt Rio Nymph line or Wulff Triangle Tapers - Teeny Mini-Tip or Rio Density Compensated type 6 7’ ft. sink-tip
- 200 grain sinking line TS200 Teeny
- 300 grain sinking line TS300 Teeny
- Tippet material should include Maxima clear Or Rio Max in 6 thru. 30 lb. spools. Fluorocarbon tippet material
We do not recommend extruded tapered leaders, we will show you how to tie your own or send you the formulas so you can tie them ahead of time. - Assorted split shot (water Gremlin-removable split-shot), large med and small
strike indicators bobber style in med and large-or antron yarn style
flies (we will send you a complete list with your deposit you can buy them from us in a prepackaged box or we can send you the recipes and photos on how to tie them) - nippers
- polarized glasses in brown amber or vermillion, Smith, Action Optics and Costa Del Mar Eyewear are some reputable brands
- Forceps or Pliers – for pinching barbs and releasing fish
- Collapsible Wading Staff – If you have a difficult time wading.
- Gravel Guards – Worn with wading boots to keep gravel out.
- Daypack – For rain jacket, camera, snacks, water bottle and/or personal items
- Camera – waterproof is best.
- Water bottle
- Insect repellent and head net
- Sun Block
- Gore-Tex or fleece lined fishing gloves.
- Waders Gore-Tex or breathable waders (best for hiking) (Simms or other comparable brands)
- Simms Windstopper fleece jacket or other comparable brand Lightweight wading or packable rain jacket
- Fleece undergarments top and bottoms for warm days, you will want to wear only the long underwear bottoms and the colder days will require fleece pants, or both. On the upper body, we recommend a similar system, a mid-weight long underwear top with a fleece jacket for colder days. Avoid cotton as it retains moisture.
- Two pair Capilene underwear bottoms or Simms Waderwick lightweight or midweights
- Socks 4 pair wading socks (Simms, Thor-lo etc.)
- A daypack is useful item to bring you can consolidate the basic essentials for your daily trip, i.e., camera, raincoat, bug spray, sun block, etc. Vests, or chest packs are optional unless you are interested in taking care of your own rigging, fly selection, etc. Most of the time, our guides prefer to control the rigging selections, which we provide with our fly program so that they may stay in contact with the changing state of the fishery.
Please bring enough clothing to last your entire stay. You will need casual, comfortable wear for around the ship and travel to and from the ship. Jeans comfortable cargo pants and shirt with wicking lightweight-tops worn in layers or alone are great for changing weather. A pair of slip-on deck shoes would also come in handy for on the ship.
THINGS NOT TO BRING:
Firearms, landing Nets, large tackle boxes, hard-sided luggage – weight is an important factor, try to keep bags to 50 lb. each, wading boots with cleats of any kind, or metal spiked bottom wading shoes – as these damage boats and decking
